7 WORTHY FOOD TO TRY AT BUFFET TOWN @ RAFFLES CITY SHOPPING MALL
"Food is our common ground, a Universal Experience." ~James Beard
What better way to describe food than by quoting the words of Legendary James Beard, a food enthusiast that placed himself on this landscape despite much hardship and tribulations in his life. Food is not just for the stomach, food is for the soul. I've always loved buffets. Typically because it not just enables me to satiate my hunger, it also allows me to try a large variety of food that makes me nodding my head in approval.
Not all buffets are able to allow me to reach that level of satisfaction. The one I tried yesterday, manages to make the cut despite it having inherent flaws. Buffet Town, as its name implies, has a setup and backdrop that makes one feel like he is walking through streets typified with specific food categories. Be it local delights, beverages, food from the land of the rising sun, Western delights and desserts.
The street like setup of the venue
It has such a broad category which is impressive considering it costs around $36 to have a buffet at this place. The range of food provided however, does not equate to all of them being of a good standard. In this case, only a few of the food on display are delightful and able to make one think to himself," Hey, I am definitely going to go back to that section to take more food again."
By now, you would know that I don't actually think that this place is fantastic but being able to try so many different types of food already makes me contented to a large extent. Besides, there is still good food present at this venue. Forget about trying the many varieties, just go for the following ones that I am going to suggest(:
1) Buffet Town Drumsticks
Golden Brown, crispy with a hot interior. Not the most outstanding kind of chicken that you're gonna taste but it is of an acceptable level.
2) Grilled Banana
It might look charred but the banana flavour is well retained despite being grilled. There is no hint of the charred taste and its rich original and fresh banana taste leaves you wanting for more. The grilled section serves goreng pisang as well but it is not quite as good as this deceiving skewered banana.
3) Satay
It is extremely common to spot satays when a buffet has a local delights section. Same goes for laksa, hokkien mee and carrot cake. But forget those. The peanut sauce is fragrant and highly addictive and blends well with the satay. Let me rephrase, it is the sauce that you should look out for when consuming those satays.
4) Corn
The corn on that very same plate is worth a go as well. Juicy and well-cooked, it retains its original flavour well.
5) Ice Cream Waffle
It is difficult to find a good ice cream waffle around but this one manages it. There is an option where you are able to ask for a freshly made waffle so you can get it piping hot. Add an ice cream topping located at the side of the counter and the end result? A Good end to a hearty meal.(:
An advice to try out the mixture of Yuzu, Vanilla and Mango. They go so well together and that mango is especially great.
6) Desserts
How can one not get desserts at a buffet place? There is a combination of what you actually can get for your dessert. A cold one like the cakes and jellies shown in the pictures on top and below, a bitter one like the herbal jelly, or even a warm one like cheng tyng for those who love to have a different alternative.
There is so much to choose from for this section at buffet town you're simply spoilt for choice.
7) Fish Head
Leaving the best for the last, this humongous fish head is a huge MUST TRY. I almost missed out on this as the bowl containing all the fish heads was empty upon the first arrival at the grilled section. Like many others before me I believe, we would conveniently just walk past that empty bowl without even giving a care about how it actually tastes like, and even look like. Thankfully, when I stepped away from that corner, I caught a glimpse of the cook refilling that bowl with 6-7 Fish Heads. When I was back 5 minutes later, all of them bar one was gone. Ridiculous!
After trying that fish head, I could really understand why that was the case. The grilled meat was tender enough but the best part of the fish head had to be the meat around the eyes. It was juicy, flavourful and creamy. After the first mouthful, the rest of the fish head I would say, became history, in my tummy that is.
On the flip side(no pun intended), the grilled section that serves up 4 of the food that I listed here takes awhile to refill their food. So unfortunately, you have to wait for the best food here.
Patience is key.
Apart from what I mentioned, there are many other food choices here that one can try. I don't think they are worth a go though but it's still a buffet whatever the case.
Personally, I'm a sucker for sashimis. I simply love them. However freshly served this sashimi was, the overly salty soya sauce for that wasabi spoilt the whole thing. Such a pity.
Here are more food pictures from Buffet Town:
And that, is my initial spread for the day before I added and tried many others.
Buffet Town isn't really the best place to go to for a buffet despite its wide variety. Perhaps, its huge variety compromised the quality of most of the food there. The minority bright sparks of food available here manages to salvage this place as a value for money venue despite its tad expensive cost.
How to get there:
